SPL Resource - Peer

The Peer SPL Resource Analysis allows you to compare SPL resource utilization, charge, and cost information for your facilities to that of a peer group that you define.

Note: This analysis does not include totals or totaling capabilities and is not risk-adjusted.

Running This Analysis

You must complete the following steps to run this analysis:

  1. Define the population on the Select Population Tab.
  2. Select the SPL resources you want to analyze on the Set Up Analysis tab.
  3. Click Run to run the analysis.

Select Population Tab:

There are 4 required prompts that you must select before running this analysis. You can choose additional filters from the Optional prompts if desired.

Required Prompts:

  • Facilities
  • Time (1 year is selected by default.)
  • Inpatient/Outpatient - (Inpatient is selected by default.)
  • Peer (You must choose at least five facilities and comply with the External Peer Methodology in order for peer data to appear on the analysis.)

Note: Resources - SPL is not a required prompt for this analysis. You can select resources at the Resources - SPL prompt; however, if you do, you are narrowing the population by the resource, not selecting the resources you want to analyze.

Set Up Analysis Tab:

Row Header Prompt

Use the options available on this tab to select resources to analyze

  • Perspective Standard Department is selected by default.
  • Facility Charge Master Resources should not be used on Peer analyses. Each facility collects and counts data in a different manor, which means that Facility Charge Master Resources cannot be compared between different facilities. Therefore, only SPL Resources should be used for Peer resource reporting.

Cases for Facility

All cases for the facility that qualified for the analysis. Even if resources are on the row, cases are still counted according to the population criteria.

Cases for Peer

All cases for the peer that qualified for the analysis. Even in resources are on the row, cases are still counted according to the population criteria.

Resource Cases for Facility

The number of facility cases that received the resource.

Resource Cases for Peer

The number of peer cases that received the resource.

Resource Cases for Facility divided by the Cases for Facility.

Resource Cases for Peer divided by the Cases for Peer.

The average number of times the resource was charged for cases that received the resource for the facility.

Quantity/Resource Case for the Facility minus Quantity/Resource Case for the Peer.

Cost/Case for Facility

The total cost for the resource used divided by the distinct number of cases for the facility.

Cost/Case for Peer

The total cost for the resource used divided by the distinct number of cases for the peer.

Cost/Resource Case Variation (Facility - Peer)

Cost Per Quantity Opportunity

(Facility Cost/Quantity - Peer Cost/Quantity) x Facility Quantity/Resource Case x Facility Resource Cases or the cost for each resource and the quantity of resources used.

Variation metrics are a new metric that shows the difference between Facility and Peer values for each metric and are as follows:

Facility Count for the Peer Metric

The Facility Count for Peer displays the number of facilities included in the Peer metrics for each row.

Depending on the row, the Facility Count for Peer metric displays the following values:

Value This value means that …

Null (the cell is blank)

No facilities in the Peer used the resource on the row. These rows will display values for the Facility metrics but the Peer values will remain blank.

<5

1-4 facilities in the Peer used the resource on the row. Because at least five facilities are required to calculate Peer metrics, these rows will display values for the Facility metrics but the Peer values will remain blank.

Number above 5

The Peer contains this exact number of facilities. These rows will display values for both Facility and Peer metrics.

Drilling

You can drill to additional resource information.

Note:The asterisk (*) to the right of a resource description indicates that this resource is at the lowest level in the hierarchy.

Drilling to Patient Details

This analysis allows you to drill to the Facility All Patient Detail Analysis, which includes all the patients that match the criteria entered at the prompts.

To access this drill down, right-click on the column header or the rows and select Drill > Drill to Patient Detail Analysis > Facility All Patient Detail Analysis.

Note: Only patients for the facilities selected at the Facilities prompt are included in patient detail drill down analyses.
