Opportunity - Facility 3M™
This analysis identifies the APR DRG Business Lines with the greatest potential for improvement. Use this analysis to see the:
- Top 10 APR DRG Business Lines with the greatest opportunity for arithmetic LOS.
- Top 10 APR DRG Business Lines with the greatest opportunity for Mortality.
Note: A super set of the APR DRG Business Lines identified is also included.

Each row is an APR DRG Business Line with opportunity. |
Default Metrics
The following metrics appear in the grid when the analysis returns:
- Total Cases - All cases that qualified for the analysis.
- Observed Arith LOS - The arithmetic mean length of stay LOS for the LOS Outcome Cases.
- O/E Arith LOS - The Observed value divided by the Expected value. Less than 1 = performing better than expected. Greater than 1 = performing worse than expected.
- SS Arith LOS - Asterisks display only if the Variation is statistically significant. The number of asterisks indicates the confidence level that the outcome's variation is not due to chance: 1 asterisk = 75%, 2 asterisks = 95%, 3 asterisks = 99%. Green asterisks = the outcome’s variance is statistically better than expected. Red asterisks = the outcome’s variance is statistically worse than expected. Total lines do not have values for Statistical Significance.
- Opportunity (Arith LOS) - Variation multiplied by the LOS Outcome Cases. There must be at least one opportunity day for a value to display. Opportunity days are rounded to the nearest whole number.
- Observed Mortality - The number of patient deaths in the Mortality Outcome Cases.
- O/E Mortality - The Observed value divided by the Expected value. Less than 1 = performing better than expected. Greater than 1 = performing worse than expected.
- SS Mortality - Asterisks display only if the Variation is statistically significant.
- Opportunity (Mortality) - Variation multiplied by the Mortality Outcome Cases. There must be at least one mortality opportunity for a value to display. Mortality opportunities are rounded to the nearest whole number. The Total for this column includes all values for the column, even if they are not displayed on the rows.
Note: The values that display for opportunity in each row are calculated based on the Variation multiplied by Outcome Cases for that row only. The Total line, on the other hand, represents the total opportunity for the population and is calculated based on the Variation multiplied by Outcome Cases for the whole analysis. The Total line for opportunity metrics is not a summation of the individual rows in the column.

Metrics in Report Objects
Report Objects allows you to add metrics to the grid. Click the
button in the Tools toolbar to see the metrics in Report Objects. You can drag-and-drop the following metrics on the grid for this analysis:
- CMS HAC Cases After Admit - The number of patients with at least one CMS Hospital Acquired Condition (HAC) after admission.
- LOS Outcome Cases - The number of cases for the LOS outcome that qualified for risk adjustment. Based on the Outcome Case methodology, some cases may not qualify for risk adjustment.
- Mortality Outcome Cases - The number of cases for the Mortality outcome that qualified for risk adjustment. Based on the Outcome Case methodology, some cases may not qualify for risk adjustment.
- Total Days - The total number of days for the LOS Total Cases.
- Total Days for LOS Outcome Cases - The total number of days for the LOS Outcome Cases.
- Total Deaths for Mortality Outcome Cases - The total number of patients whose Discharge Status=Expired for the Mortality Outcome Cases.
